interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that paved the way for viewing type 2 diabetes as a potentially reversible condition for many patients. Dr. Barnard has authored more than 100 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers, and is the editor in chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, a textbook made available to all U.S. medical students. As president of the Physicians Committee, Dr. Barnard leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. His research contributed to the acceptance of plant-based diets in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In 2015, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. In 2018, he received the Medical Society of the District of Columbia’s Distinguished Service Award. He has hosted four PBS television programs on nutrition and health. Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Dr. Barnard received his M.D. degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the same institution. (2020). It identifies how meat has been a valued masculine-identified protein source and the ways that assumptions about meat eating reinforce a gender binary. It shows the operating of a hierarchy which upholds men’s supposed needs for animal foods. It proposes that many meat advertisements are conduits for hate-speech against women and also that they offer ways to encode "whiteness" without being explicit. It also analyzes how animal agriculture draws on conventional dominant discourse to foster oppression, especially the ways in which animal agriculture normalizes sexual exploitation, control of female reproduction, and reifies rape culture in its depictions of “consent” by animals to be impregnated and consumed. The presentation draws upon images that have been sent from around the world by my readers, truly “grassroots sociologists.” The images show the continuing power of the ideology I have called “the sexual politics of meat” and “the pornography of meat.”
Carol J. Adams is a feminist scholar and activist whose written work explores the cultural construction of overlapping and interconnected oppressions, as well as the ethics of care. Adams’s first book, The Sexual Politics of Meat, is now celebrating its 30th anniversary. She is also the author of Burger, in Bloomsbury’s Object Lessons Series, and co-author with Virginia Messina of Protest Kitchen: Fight Injustice, Save the Planet, and Fuel Your Resistance One Meal at a Time, and of many other books. A new and updated The Pornography of Meat (originally published in 2004), appears in the fall of 2020. The visual accompaniment to The Sexual Politics of Meat, it will include 340 images sent from around the world by Adams’s readers, whom she calls “grassroots sociologists.” She is working on a memoir of her mother based on her essay from the New York Times, “Finding Myself in My Mother’s Calendars.” www.caroljadams.com
